For those that read my personal blog, you know that Dustin and I are seriously considering moving to Tampa, FL in the fall.
The entire "let's move" talk started off as kind of a joke. D and I have lived in the Midwest our entire lives and you would think at this point we'd be used to snow and cold. Nope. I hate it and Dustin's getting there too. So last year we started saying, "We should just move." But in that not really serious kind of voice.
Except somehow this changed over the last year. And in the last few weeks we've been talking about really, seriously just picking up and moving.
How can we do this? Well, we don't own a home. We don't have kids. I'm not working right now and my classes are all going to be online. Dustin's job provides him with the opportunity to work from home from anywhere in the world (barring we'd have internet and a landline, that is). Yes, we have family and friends here but at this point in our lives we're kind of thinking, "Why not? We need an adventure!"
I've been researching apartments in Florida (how are they so much CHEAPER and NICER than anything that can be found here in River Falls, WI) and Dustin is working on finding out exactly how working from home would be. But it really sounds like we might just be doing this. For real.
The weird part is that part of me feels like I should be at least a little freaked out about this. But I'm NOT. Sure, I'm going to miss my friends and family. And the Mall of America. And the drive-in. Oh and AUTUMN. I'll miss that season. But not enough to keep me here right now.
Florida... here we come?

Cost of living is for some reason so much more where you are at. One thing you need to be prepared for is the insurance. Even renting an apartment, you will need to have insurace in the case of damage from hurricanes.
My husband & I did this very thing 4 years ago!!! It's so exciting - it took us 2 years to plan for it & make the leap of faith. The best advice I can give you is to research the heck out of where you want to go. Visit a few times before the move & really look at it objectively. Best of luck on your journey!
And look at taxes. My understanding is that they are low there - why else would all those retirees be headed that way. You may want to consider the neighborhoods as you start to narrow it down, and make sure you don't end up somewhere that you are 30 years younger than everyone else. That happened to some friends of mine who moved there in their 50's and were surrounded by 80's. They eventually found a house in another neighborhood.
Great time to make it an adventure. Enjoy!
Wow, Krysten. I admire you and Dustin for taking this chance and embracing this change together as a married couple. No matter what you decide, I bet it's comforting to know that you are going to embark on this adventure together:)
I am SO excited for you guys! I think it's going to be such an amazing adventure and I can't wait to hear all about it!
Take it from me...moving can be such a great thing. Life is too short to not have experiences like that! And if in the end you guys decide that you want to move back, there would be nothing stopping you!
You go girl. Because then I have a free room when I go to Florida. ;)
eeeep! big decision! florida really would be lovely though....mmmmm.....sunshine. maybe craig and i can join you on your move? :).
You can ALWAYS move back...follow the sun Mrs! And think of all the new adventures ahead.
that sounds exciting! and brave, too. :)
um, THIS IS SO EXCITING!!! ay yi yi! ohemgee! i think it is so cool that you guys are able to do this! can't wait to hear what happens!
I say go for it.
Me and my husband did the same thing after we first got married. We picked up and moved to Richmond Va, away from family, friend, etc.
It was definitely an adventure, and we spent 8 years there before we decided to move back to Texas.
Moving now will be much easier before you decide to start a family. I think the hurricane aspect of Florida would sort of suck, but so would the snow! ;)
Best of luck!
Although I was born and raised in NY, I was living in WISCONSIN before we moved to Georgia. Confused yet??? I can tell you I sure didn't miss those brutal midwest winters when we were in our shorts and tank tops our first Christmas!!!
Go for it!
I would love, love, LOVE to move to Florida! Or California. Or Austin, TX. Or Oregon or Washington. (anywhere other than New Mexico, really!)
As long as you aren't tied down to Wisconsin, you may as well have fun and move. If you don't like Tampa, you can always move back :)
Lamb’s Most Recent Post: The Chalkboard Door is for Holiday Decorating!
wow that's great...wishing you both the best in your decision xxx

Apartments now are so inexpensive because they overbuilt FL... you can really bargain hunt these days... have a nice sunday!
Moving can totally be an adventure that is a good thing. My hubby and I did it from Dallas to Seattle, and it was the best thing we could have ever done!
I can totally relate! When I was with the hubby, we did that very thing 9 months after we got married. One day on a whim we got on a plane to Chicago from NJ, rented an apartment, flew back to NJ, quit our jobs, rented a truck, drove to Chicago and then found new jobs. Somehow it all worked out and I know it will for you too.
Do it while you can!!!!
Exciting and scary! Do it!
See the world is the best thing you can ever do for self. You learn that you are only soooo little on this earth and there is so much more than you. you'll love it.
We are kind of going through the same thing right now - so ready for a change! We live in the midwest too and are so sick of the cold weather. Hope everything works out for you!
Take me with you!! I live over here in MN and we'll go down there together :-) Oh girl, I've been thinking of moving to FL for years. You'd have so much fun... do it! And just remember, you can always move back here, WI isn't going anywhere.
Email me with questions doll!
i wish i was on a beach somewhere right now x
i'm so jealous! my hubby and i would LOVE to live in FL! we're warm blooded through and through! hope it happens for you two!
Home insurance is high there compaired to where I live but that and taxes are kinda relative to your income. I would love to live in Floria and would move in a minute.
that is so exciting! this is definitely the time in your life to go for it!
kiwi and i have always talked about moving back to new zealand after i finish school... i think we just really have to commit to the idea and do it!
What a fun adventure. I think you should definitely go for it.
Ah! That is so awesome. The best of luck to you. I will be moving in June and I'm terrified. Lol. xx
wow! what a fun big step!
SO EXCITING!!! totally looking forward to hearing more of your plans and move :)
Living in the south is an adjustment but it's SO NICE all the time. I lived in IA from birth to 18 and wouldn't change it. I'd like to be closer to family but it's like the artic for me now! Look forward to hearing more about this!!
Traditions? Oh man, we've got a lot now that we've been married for almost 6 years. But we always have a big Saturday morning/afternoon breakfast, we always nap together on Sundays after church, trying new ethnic foods together (at least a couple times a year we try something WAY out of our comfort zone) keeps things spicy & keeps us interesting!
Moving can actually be great fun... :)
Thanks for stopping by my little blogerino!
I love this post! It is sooo important to create little traditions with your partner, it's what keeps you connected for the long haul.
Carl gets home from work earlier then I do, and he has a cup of tea waiting for me when I walk in the door. It's a little thing, but sometimes that's all that gets me through the last hour of work.
Also we watch 'our programs' on Thursday nights(Parks and Rec, Office and 30Rock)
Im from Florida! Lived there my whole life until I moved up to Philly. Let me know if you have any questions! Good thing though- no income tax! haha
But, it hot. Not like "ahhhh its summer" hot. But like omg dunk me in a ice bucket hot. You get used to it though, dont worry :-) Just dont be one of those people who complains about how hot it is (that annoys the natives!) lol
Oh! I forgot to say how nice it is to be able to lay out and get tan in February. Tan for Valentines Day! And usually, you can wear shorts on Christmas! Usually. And being so close to the beach all the time is amaaaazing...
Sunday afternoon "naps". We have been taking them for 20 years together. And sometimes we even sleep! tee hee.
Hi K! I live in Tampa and have lived her for a long, long time. If you have any questions - about anything, please feel free to let me know!
Good luck!
And sometimes its nice to just up and change things.
