Magic Spark

Through Formspring, Jenni from absent minded asked:

I know this is a dorky way to preface a question but it's the only way to describe it. A few nights ago on The Bachelor, Jake, was describing why he chose the woman he did by repeatedly saying they had the "magic spark." What is this magic spark?

My answer... I have no idea.

I remember the day I met Dustin. I walked into Perkins on my 3rd day of work and there was this tall, dark haired, dark eyed boy standing behind the counter. I introduced myself and I remember thing, "My my, he is cute!"

That night he made me feel at ease, joking around and pretty much goofing off when there weren't customers around. And I will say that I felt something there, but I would call it my initial attraction to him.

Sometimes I think that the "magic spark" is something that books and TV have made up to make everything seem more romantic. I hate to say that because I used to consider myself a total hopeless romantic. And while I still love a good love story, I feel like I have a more realistic look at love too.

Maybe the "magic spark" for Jake and Vienna was the fact that Jake wanted to get her into bed (and she seemed to make it so easy that night she wore that lingerie for him - who does that on a national dating show). Or maybe Dustin and I just took longer to get hit by cupid's arrow and we didn't experience that spark.

I'd love to hear what others have to say on the issue!

I completely agree with this. Well said. I didn't feel this 'magic spark' the media is always raving about either with my fiance. But I did feel something kind of like anyone would when they realize 'whoa, you are the best person i've ever met! can we please be friends/lovers?!' But this magic spark could be subjective. For Jake and Vienna it is a sexual chemistry, others a sudden urge to befriend that person, and in my case; it was finding the place to fill that void I never realized I had.

Great question, and great post! I agree - I wouldn't say that when I first saw Mike I had a "magic spark" - but I was attracted and definitely wanted to know more about him. Once we started talking and dating and getting to know each other, I just knew that he was someone special.

When i met my husband for the first time, i got butterflies in my stomach. That is how i knew he was different. No one ever game me butterflies. After being together for 4 years, he still does!

I never felt "the spark" between my hubs and I. Or ever before that, to be honest. I also don't believe in "love at first sight", but mostly because love is deeper than first sight will allow. For our wedding, I received a cute scrapbook kit, and part of the process is writing down "When you knew __________ was the one". I had to sit down with hubs, and we both ended up talking about how it just worked out, and worked out better than either of us had dreamed. Neither of us had that "ah-ha!" moment! :)

I used to poo poo the ideas of lightning and sparks and love at first sight. I was far too practical for that. Too world weary at the ancient age of 18. What kind of relationship could last if it were built on something imaginary or ephemeral? It was just setting yourself up for disappointment.

But the first time I met Gary, I couldn't take my eyes off him. I couldn't believe I was feeling this.. this very palpable attraction. Every time he opened his mouth, we just got sparkier and sparkier and I was pretty sure I was losing my mind! This couldn't be happening, right?

But it did and I can no longer be a naysayer. It isn't the only way to recognize connection, but I now believe it's real.
